Say hello to Charlie…

We would like you to meet Charlie, he’s an orangutan that lives at Dr. Birute Galdikas’ Orangutan Foundation International care center in Pangluk Bun Borneo. He’s a playful, curious, and amazing orangutan. He also needs our help in order to survive.

Charlie lives in the care center along with his other orangutan friends. It is for him and his friends that we exist and do what we do. We want to help him, as well as all of the other orangutans. Charlie represents hundreds more who are just like him and all in need of protection. If they don’t get the protection they need researchers believe that orangutans could be extinct in less than 25 years.

We want to help make sure that Charlie and his friends are taken care of for the rest of their lives. We want to provide them with the medical care, support, and protection that they need. By raising the funds that we need to build our sanctuary, we can give Charlie and his friend exactly what they need. But we will also be able to continue our efforts in educating the public. The more people learn about what they can do to help stop the extinction of the orangutans, the better!

Through interaction with infants and juveniles, visitors will come to realize just how alike humans and orangutans are. After spending 4 days at the sanctuary, Camp Leakey and visiting the OFI care center visitors will be overwhelmed with heart felt emotions and be ready with facts. Just imagine how powerful that alone will be!

Can you imagine the conversations that visitors will have about their experience? Their word of mouth accolades will translate into more donations and more help for Charlie and his friends. Here is where we could tell you horrific stories about how Charlie and his friends became orphans, read Dr. Birute’s book “Reflections of Eden,” but we are choosing a different path.

Look at the photos, watch the videos, what do you see? Do you see the almost smiles on the infant faces? Do you see the juveniles playing in the forest and learning to become self-sufficient? We hope you feel as we do….. that they are happy, well cared for and they are learning to rely on themselves so they can one day be released to live in the wild. That is where we come in.

Through interactive education at the Sanctuary in Borneo and elementary/high school educational programs, GAPS is going to let the world know that Charlie and his friends need help. Please, help Charlie and his friends today!
